William "Bill" Hannon

November 19, 1934 — May 28, 2009

William M. “Bill” Hannon, Sr. age 74, of New Castle, joined his friends and loved ones in heaven, Thursday, May 28, 2009 at Henry County Hospital. He was born November 19, 1934 in Muncie, Indiana to the late Joseph and Ruth (Keys) Hannon.

A 1952 graduate of Muncie Central High School, Bill was employed at Tom Cherry Muffler and Westinghouse in Muncie. He then opened Raintree Muffler in New Castle in 1969, which he owned and operated until 1981 A longtime race enthusiast, he managed Mt. Lawn Speedway, was an avid NASCAR fan and owned and drove stock cars for many years. A very successful business man, he had also farmed for many years. He enjoyed traveling and wintering in Florida.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years: Phyllis J. Hannon of New Castle; five children: Don F. (wife: Kathy) Purnell of New Castle, Sandra Shipley of New Castle, Bill Hannon Jr. (wife, Gaylena) of New Castle, Joe (wife, Debbie) Hannon of New Castle and Rodney (wife: Tina) Hannon of Holly Hill, FL; ten grandchildren: Ryan and Eric Purnell, Larry and Brock Shipley, Matthew and Mark Hannon, Miranda Parrish, Clint and Melissa Hannon, Ross Hannon; nine great grandchildren; sister: Marcia (husband: Robert) Amburn of Muncie; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Saundra Skinner and Conna Cook; a brother: Ronald S. Hannon.

Services will be at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, May 30, 2009 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Steve Dugger officiating. Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, May 30, 2009 at the funeral home. Burial will be at Gardens of Memory in Muncie at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 1, 2009.
