William E. “Gene” McLaughlin, age 84, of New Castle, passed away Saturday, January 19, 2013 at Henry County Hospital. He was born January 19, 1929 in New Castle, Indiana to the late George and Kathrin (Shetterly) McLaughlin.
Gene retired from Chrysler Corporation in 1997 following 42 years of service and was a member of the UAW #371 in New Castle. He was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II. Gene loved his church family and was currently a member of Whittier Lane Baptist Church and in years past had served as a Sunday school teacher, youth leader and a deacon. He was a devoted husband and father and was very enthusiastic about family functions. Gene was a true outdoorsman and enjoyed both fishing and hunting, especially squirrel, rabbit, and deer. He also spent some time flea marketing with his wife Ann selling tools and dolls. Gene’s prize was his little Jack Russell “J.R”.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ann (Huckaby) McLaughlin of New Castle children, Ruth (husband, Don) Guffey of New Castle, Pam Vetor of Daleville, Janet (husband, Dave) Wagner of Muncie; grandchildren, Jason Loveless of New Castle, Amy (husband, Bob) Stalvey of Avon, Bill Guffey of Greenfield, and Mark Douthitt of Albany; great grandchildren, Kaylee Loveless of Indianapolis, Carolina, Savannah, Madison Stalvey of Avon, Lillie Guffey of New Castle, Mali Guffey of McCordsville, Wesli Welch of Daleville; brother, John (wife, Jean) McLaughlin of New Castle; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Lori Welch; brother, George “Bud” McLaughlin; sister, Mary Ferguson.
Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service with Pastor Frank Wood officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to the Henry County Humane Society, 11 Midway Dr., New Castle, IN 47362 with envelopes available at the funeral home. Military Rites will be conducted by local American Legion and Veteran of Foreign Wars and an active duty contingent from the United States Navy.
