Wyona Ammerman, 63, of New Castle, passed away Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at Addison Place in New Castle. She was born January 1, 1952 in New Castle, the daughter of Ormal and Jean Spears Ammerman.
After graduating from Blue River Valley Junior/Senior High School in 1970, Wyona attended Indiana University. There, she earned a bachelor’s degree in 1974 and a master’s degree in 1976, both in music education. Later, she earned an associate’s degree in computer programming from Ivy Tech.
Wyona began her working career as a band director at Washington High School and then as an elementary music teacher, in the Indianpolis Public School System. She then was a band director at Villa Grove, Illinois. After obtaining the computer programming degree, she was employed for many years as a contracted programmer for Indecon. She also worked in the transportation department of the Plainfield School System.
She was a 52-year member of First Christian Church of Mooreland. She was an avid student of the Bible and had an extensive library of study reference books. While living in Indianapolis, she attended Brownsburg Christian Church, Bible Church of Brownsburg, Grace Bible Church and Chapel Rock Christian Church.
Wyona enjoyed playing in the Starlighters Big Band and making music with her clarinet and saxophone was a source of great joy to her. The fondest wish of her family and friends is that she is in God’s celestial band in Heaven.
She is survived by her sisters, Linda Madison of New Castle and Marlene Holliday of St. Charles, MO; a brother, Ronald (Nancy) Ammerman of Jacksonville Beach, FL; three nephews, Bill Holliday, David (Jennifer) Holliday, and Jon (Miranda) Madison; two nieces, Cheri Holliday and Vicki Roper; and several great-nieces and nephews.
Wyona was preceded in death by her parents; paternal grandparents, Harlan and Clara Ammerman; maternal grandparents, George and Velma Spears; one aunt and three uncles.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Nathan Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in Brick Cemetery near Hagerstown. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
